Gynecomastia Surgery Procedure
Gynecomastia Surgery |
Gynecomastia is commonly known as enlargement of male breast tissues. It is caused by an imbalance between the hormones, estrogen, and testosterone. The change is often detected in boys in their teenage years. It can also happen to newborn babies and old grown men when the balance of the two hormones changes.
Symptoms of gynecomastia include:
- Swelling in one or both breasts.
- Pain around the area of the breast.
- Asymmetrical breast.
If you consider any of the above symptoms, it is recommended to consult a Plastic surgeon.
Procedure for Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is performed by a Plastic surgeon with the use of general or local anesthesia. There are two techniques that are used to complete the surgery:
- Liposuction technique
This technique is used to remove the excess fatty tissue around the breast. A small incisions is made to insert the cannula and then it is moved back and forth to loosen the excess fat and then it is removed by using vacuum suction.
- Excision technique
This technique is used when glandular tissue under Nipple areola has to be removed to correct gynecomastia. A cut is made on lower half of nipple areola. Excision of the glandular tissue is done.
After completing the procedure of removing the excess fatty tissue by using any one or both techniques in some cases, the incision is closed. It can take up to two to four weeks to heal from the surgery.
After the procedure you are advised to wear a pressure garment/ corset for the swelling to settle down quick & for skin contraction. You can resume office in 2 days, but avoid long driving for 2 weeks. No lifting of weights & swimming for a month after the procedure.
